ANGUILLA–Minister of Infrastructure, Communications, Utilities and Housing, Curtis Richardson briefed the media at the Blowing Point Ferry Port Terminal, on Tuesday, July 2, of the details involved in the recently announced plan to upgrade the exterior surroundings of the area. These much-needed upgrades include re-designing the traffic flow to and from the ferry port, expanding and upgrading the customer parking lot, and relocating the taxi waiting area. These upgrades will eliminate the current vehicular congestion at the port’s loading/unloading area, greatly increase pedestrian safety and manoeuvrability and enhance the efficiency and overall aesthetic outward appearance of the port area.

Richardson showed the media an empty four-acre area where, over the past few days, several severely storm-damaged buildings were demolished and cleared. Stating that the Anguilla Air and Seaport Authority (ASPA) would take ownership of the cleared property, he described in detail the upgrades and vehicle pattern flow adjustments slated for construction due to start in the very near future. The capacity of the consolidated customer parking lot will be greatly increased and the lot will be paved and secured. The road into the port will be re-configured to facilitate three options: traffic will have the option of flowing into either the drop-off/pick-up area, the parking lot, or the neighbouring community of Cul de Sac via a new one-way road extension into the community, with the existing two-way road being re-designated as the one-way exit from the community. The taxi fleet will have a designated parking area separate from the customer parking area.

Richardson said, “By the first of August, when everyone is coming home for Carnival, we are hoping to put an end to the congestion and all the frustration that people have had for the past five decades at the port. It’s been too small, and I thank the people for their tolerance, but it is time to get it right.” He added that he continues to push for the plans for a new ferry terminal, saying that when a terminal is built, it will be good to have all the associated pieces such as an adequate parking lot already in place. He continues to vigorously advocate for the building of a new ferry terminal in the near future. He said, “This port area is a place of national prominence and development. I will not accept a tent as the permanent fix.”

The minister acknowledged numerous public officers and government members who were instrumental in putting together the details of the plan and then launching it into action. Singled out for their support and technical advice were members of ASPA, his permanent secretary Kareem Hodge and his infrastructure advisor Julian Daniels, as well as his fellow government ministers and colleagues.
