SOUTH REWARD–Two Volunteer Corps St. Maarten VKS members are stationed at St. Maarten Vocational Training School (SMVTS) daily to provide extra support to security and keeping order at the institution, Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports (ECYS) Wycliffe Smith told reporters at the Council of Ministers press briefing on Wednesday.
The perimeter fence at the school is also being repaired.
Smith said he had visited the school on Wednesday with several members of his Ministry. “We met with the director and the management team of the school. The main topic of discussion was the establishment of a task force to comprehensively deal with the complex issues at St. Maarten Vocational Training School. In the meantime, my ministry is continuing our work towards providing a safe school plan for all our schools,” Smith said.
Tension rose at the institution last week when a 2019 Hyundai Tucson belonging to a teacher at the school was stolen by a student. Two students were subsequently arrested, but later released. The Tucson was since found stripped and destroyed.
Lee said the problems being faced at the school require a lot of work and input from all stakeholders, including parents and the community.
