Tzu Chi entertains, treats seniors Jan. 1

JOHNS--St. Maarten Tzu Chi Foundation continued its long-standing New Year’s Day tradition on January 1, when a number of cheerful volunteers visited the St. Martin’s Home in St. John’s Estate to treat and entertain seniors on the first day of 2018.   In the spirit of giving and sharing, volunteers distributed 76 packages and 150 eggless Ponche Kuba cupcakes to seniors and St. Martin’s Home staffers. Each of the 76 packages contained a package of club social, soap, towel, juice, sugar-free chocolate wafer and a bottle of Shilling Oil.   Tzu Chi said in a press release on Tuesday that volunteers also entertained the seniors by, amongst other things, performing a sign-language song entitled “One Family,” which appeared to have touched the hearts of those who witnessed the performance. Volunteers performing during the January 1 event.   Volunteers also performed a skit depicting the story of how God created life, which was also enjoyed by the audience.   One senior shed tears of joy during the programme, while a visually-impaired senior, enjoyed the performance so much that he couldn’t contain his laughter during the performances.   Tzu Chi volunteers were happy to be present to spend part of their New Year’s Day with the seniors, particularly one of the seniors who marked his 98^th birthday on January 1.   A total of 23 volunteers participated in the New Year’s Day celebration at the St. Martin’s Home.   Tzu Chi Commissioner Sandra Cheung said she was grateful that the foundation had the opportunity to continue its New Year’s Day tradition at the senior’s home and thanked volunteers for their time and efforts, and the seniors and staff for accommodating the foundation and for being gracious hosts.  Volunteers with one of the seniors.
