NEW YORK–A total of ninety-five organizations in sixteen countries have presented a large-scale plan to deal with the flow of refugees from Venezuela. This is according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNCR), which coordinated their efforts.
The approach aims to ensure the safety of migrants on the road as well as at sea and to ensure they are properly integrated into the communities where they end up.
Curaçao is also considered one of the nations that have seen a great number of people fleeing Venezuela in recent years. Other Caribbean territories include Trinidad and Tobago, Aruba and Guyana.
An amount of over US $34 million is budgeted to be allocated for this area: The largest part of this amount is earmarked for emergency aid.
Venezuela’s South American neighbour Colombia needs the most financial help: More than 300 million dollars have been calculated for this nation alone.
The plan devotes extensive attention to poor reception of Venezuelan migrants on Curaçao and Aruba as a result of inadequate laws and regulations, as well as the limited capacity on the islands to steer such a large inflow in the right direction. In the document, the degrading local conditions for these refugees are described quite explicitly.
