Undocumented residents can stay under conditions | THE DAILY HERALD

Minister Girigorie

WILLEMSTAD–Persons who have lived illegally in Curaçao for more than a year that meet certain conditions may apply for a residence permit. Minister of Justice Quincy Girigorie announced this “responsible integration” policy during a press conference.

Based on humanitarian grounds, he wants to accommodate undocumented migrants under certain conditions. These are foreigners who entered the country legally before March 13 last year, now have a job and, for example, also children who go to school.

According to the minister, these immigrants can contribute to society in a legal way. This means, among other things, that they start paying taxes. They must also be insured for medical care.

Girigorie said at least 9,000 people are residing on the island unlawfully. Not all are eligible, but about 3,000 to 4,000 meet the requirements.
