Union reviewing ‘function book,’ to be tabled in GOA on Jan. 11 | THE DAILY HERALD

PHILIPSBURG–The process to get the “rechtspositie” function book regulated for workers in the justice sector is one step closer to being finalised.

The Nationale Algemene Politie Bond (NAPB) union received the draft function book in December from Holland-based company Balans, which was working on the document. Amongst other things, the “rechtspositie” regulates police officers’ legal status and position to ensure they are placed in their correct salary scales.

The NAPB police union met on Monday to discuss the document and to determine what, if any, changes are necessary. NAPB is expected to come to a position on the document.

The document will be handled in the GOA, the body in which matters related to civil servants are discussed, on January 11. Under the GOA’s new structure, consensus has to be reached on matters being handled.

NAPB President Rogerrel Mauricia told The Daily Herald on Tuesday the union has been busy revising the document and putting its final touches on it, ahead of the GOA meeting.

Mauricia said NAPB had a positive meeting with Justice Minister Cornelius de Weever last year on a number of issues. He said the minister had arranged for the union to sit in on the GOA meeting as an observer. NAPB is currently not a member of the GOA, as a minimum number of members is now required to be part of the body.

One of Mauricia’s goals this year is to focus on qualifying for GOA membership, as this is very important in properly defending the interest of workers whom the union represents. He said joining with another union such as the ABVO union is one option on the table.

However, his first option is working internally to increase NAPB membership. He plans to work on motivating membership and educating members on the importance of the union being part of the GOA, so that more persons can sign up with the union, for its numbers to  increase. He also plans to engage NAPB shop stewards from the various departments in the justice sector to assist in getting more persons to sign up.

Asked what his goals for this year are, Mauricia said right now he is focused on finalising matters related to the function book from the union’s end, as this is a long-pending issue that needs to be completed. Other plans include working with the justice sector to help better the organisation in general and focus on issues such as discipline and comradery amongst workers in the sector.

He wished NAPB members and its partners a prosperous New Year and looks forward to working with everyone in the best interest of workers in the justice sector.
