A scene of the accident.
COLE BAY–Two persons were injured and two vehicles severely damaged when the unlicensed driver of a Hyundai Accent bypassed the roundabout at the eastern section of the causeway bridge on Union Road in Cole Bay, made an unauthorised turn headed to Marigot and slammed head-on into an oncoming Hyundai Santa Fe.
Police spokesperson Chief Inspector Ricardo Henson said in a police press release on Sunday that the accident had occurred around 4:10am Sunday. He said the driver of the Accent with licence plate P-6244 was coming from the causeway bridge, made an illegal left turn toward Marigot (not going around the roundabout) and collided head-on with the Santa Fe with licence plate M-1238, which at the time was coming from Marigot and heading toward Cole Bay.
The impact caused considerable damage to both vehicles and both drivers suffered bruises and complained of pain in several areas of their body. Both were treated on the scene by paramedics. However, the driver of P-6244 was taken to Louis-Constant Fleming Hospital in French St. Martin for further treatment.
The driver of P-6244 was not in possession of a driver’s licence and committed several other traffic violations, Henson said. Both vehicles were towed from the location.
The Police Traffic Department is investigating the matter.
