Local wildlife photographer Binkie van Es discovered two juvenile Flamingos by Orient Bay in a pond on Wednesday.
“This is extremely rare for St. Maarten, they have not been seen here in many, many years,” Van Es wrote The Daily Herald in an email. “This once again proves that our island is a crucial stop for a great many migrating birds and that makes it extra important to preserve nature as much as we can. It also illustrates that we have alternative sources for tourism, nature based, and by tapping those income sources, nature preservation will pay for itself.”
