PHILIPSBURG–The recent spate of countrywide power outages and load-shedding and the current financial state of utilities company GEBE are the catalyst for a request by United People’s (UP) party Members of Parliament for a Central Committee meeting with the company’s managing board.
The request, submitted to Parliament Chairwoman Sarah Wescot-Williams on Thursday, calls for GEBE’s Chief Executive Officer Kenrick Chittick, Chief Operations Officer Veronica Jansen-Webster and Chief Financial Officer Iris Arrindell to appear before the legislature as soon as possible.
The five MPs want “to deliberate on the current state of affairs within the company” with the managing team, the letter states.
UP leader MP Theo Heyliger said, “GEBE is being fleeced by the current coalition via its finance minister to balance the very unbalanced budget. Parliament and by extension the people of St. Maarten should know what effect the bleeding of money from GEBE has had on its operations and ability to do maintenance and/or get buy new equipment.”
Heyliger along with UP Parliamentarians Franklin “Frankie” Meyers, Claret Connor, Sidharth “Cookie” Bijlani and Tamara Leonard signed the request letter.
