The scene of the accident on Friday afternoon, where a man was buried under a load of sand.
BACK BAY–The St. Maarten Fire Department, the St. Maarten Police Force KPSM, and the Ambulance Department were called out to Turnstone Road in Back Bay after 5:00pm Friday because a man had been buried under a load of sand.
According to information received by The Daily Herald, the man was reportedly excavating a hole and some of the removed sand shifted and fell back into the hole, partly burying him.
Emergency services freed the trapped man shortly after 7:00pm Friday.
Early reports indicated that his face was not under the sand and he was still able to communicate with emergency workers while they were busy working to free him. Emergency workers said at the time that he had to be freed slowly to avoid aggravating whatever injuries he may have had. Heavy machinery was called to the scene to help remove the sand.
After removing the sand from on top of his body, a basket was lowered into the hole and the man was lifted to safety.
Luckily, the man received only minor injuries in this incident. This newspaper understands he was able to walk to the ambulance under his own power and was treated at the scene by Ambulance Department personnel.
