PHILIPSBURG–The Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports has paid out US $933,055 in insurance funds to various school boards for Hurricane Irma-related repairs.
This amount represents 16.96 per cent of the advance insurance payment towards the preliminary claim settlement from NAGICO Insurances. Education Minister told Members of Parliament (MPs) on Monday that the school boards received these funds for immediate repairs according to specific peril, which included, doors, windows, electrical work and roofs. This was based on calculations from preliminary damage-assessment sheets from NAGICO Insurances.
In providing a breakdown of the payment, Smith said the Foundation for Catholic Education SKOS had received $136,573 for immediate repairs to St. Dominic Primary School and $275,002 for immediate repairs to Sister Marie Laurence School.
The School Board for Secondary Education SVOBE received $233,066 for immediate repairs to Sundial School. The Foundation for Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) Education received $288,414 for immediate repairs to the St. Maarten Seventh-Day Adventist School.
Additionally, the Foundation for Academic and Vocational Education (FAVE) will receive $120,035 for immediate repairs to St. Maarten Academy academic section. The FAVE board is still to receive these funds, although the advice was finalised and signed in early April 2019.
Also, an advice was drafted and signed by the Council of Ministers for repairs to six of the eight public schools. This was based on terms of reference drafted by the Public Education Division and the Ministry of Public Housing, Spatial Planning, Environment and Infrastructure VROMI. Funds are earmarked to repair the six public schools.
“The bidding process has been conducted, and we are now awaiting the completion of this phase. The funds are reserved for immediate repairs according to specific peril,” Smith told MPs.
The Division for Public Education will receive NAf. 4,797,725 for immediate repairs at Oranje School, Marie Genevieve de Weever School, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School, Ruby Labega Primary School, Dr. Alma Fleming Rogers Educational Care Center and St. Maarten Vocational School (SMVTS)
Smith said repairs to Leonald Conner School, Charles Leopold Bell School and the roof of the gym and covered play area at Dr. Alma Fleming-Rogers Educational Care Center, have been referred for funding via the Trust Fund.
