MARIGOT—Young basketball players are benefitting from the expertise of four renowned basketball coaches from the USA at a camp taking place this week in the Omnisports Hall, Galis Bay.
Organised by the Territorial Committee of Basketball in St. Martin (CTBSM) the camp was launched on Monday with about 30 children in the presence of Territorial Councillor for sports, Alain Gros-Desormeaux and Federal Technical Adviser for the Collectivité’s Sports Department, Charles-Henry Palvair.
The mornings from 9:00am to 12:00pm are devoted to the 11 to 14 years age group and from 3:00pm to 5:00pm the 15 years and up. The camp is free for all children and covers all aspects of the game.
The cost of staging the camp and bringing in the coaches has been met by the Collectivité and the basketball committee.
The invited coaches are Gordon Gibbons, Brent Buchanan, Randy Lee and Christophe Humbert who is actually from Martinique but based in the USA.
“We have high expectations even from the lower age groups and as we get to the older kids the teaching gets more sophisticated,” explained Brent Buchanan from Atlanta. “We’re teaching them different formations etcetera but with the younger kids we teach them the fundamentals and the skills and how hard they have to work.
“We’re very honoured and excited to be here,” Buchanan added, noting the coaching team is off to Martinique next.
Alain Gros-Desormeaux thanked the coaches and the basketball committee for the great efforts made on behalf of the youth.
