USM board called to Parliament Tuesday

PHILIPSBURG–The University of St. Martin (USM) board has been called to appear before Parliament on Tuesday to explain their motives for shutting the doors of the country’s only tertiary education institution.

The public Central Committee meeting of Parliament in the General Assembly Hall of Parliament House on Wilhelminastraat is scheduled for 10:00am. The session was requested by Members of Parliament (MPs) who form the new majority of eight.

USM was “forced to close its academic doors as of October 31,” the board announced in mid-October. However, the board added on its website, it was “still keeping its door open for further discussions with the Minister of Education and the Government.”

Board President Valerie Giterson-Pantophlet stated: “I hope that the closing of the USM is a wakeup call to everyone that we need the law of tertiary education in place, we need to give our young people who remain on the island a chance to better themselves, and we need to secure the future of our children. We need to create a new civilisation. It cannot be business as usual anymore.”
