PHILIPSBURG–The Third Raising the Curtain on Race (RCR) Conference will be held in Curaçao on December 6, 7 and 8, and Caribbean Diaspora Scholars urges Caribbean citizens, advocating for a full and equal participation in all aspects of society, to attend.
The conference is a collaboration amongst Curaçao’s National Commission for UNESCO, University of St. Martin (USM) and Eastern Caribbean Public Health Foundation in St. Eustatius.
The 2018 theme of the Conference is Race and Development. The conference will be a continuation of the 2015 and 2016 dialogues of “How we can work toward the common goal of equality and equity for all.” The conference was cancelled in 2017 due to Hurricanes Irma and Maria.
Some specific issues that will be discussed at this year’s conference include the need for a de-colonial framework for research; promotion of inclusive developmental projects for the Caribbean communities; exploring history and memory through a decolonized framework suited for the Caribbean; restoration and repair of the history and memory of the former colonized Caribbean islands; and the role of education and identity formation to create an inclusive society.
The first two days of the conference will take place in the meeting room of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports. A special event is organised in the evening of the 7th for the local launching of the book: Smash the Pillars: Decoloniality and the Imaginary of Colour in the Dutch Kingdom, edited by Melissa F. Weiner and Antonio Carmona Báez.
Some of the contributors of this volume will be present at this event. The venue of the conference will change on December 8, to the National Archaeological Anthropological Memory Management (NAAM) at Johan van Walbeeckplein #13. The conference will conclude with a special community dialogue meeting, where individuals and community-based organizations will exchange experiences. The goal is to jointly create a realistic agenda of priority actions to be undertaken to ensure that societies are inclusive and ensure equal and equitable development for all.
Conference registration price is US $35 per person until December 5. The conference fee will increase to US $45 as of December 6. The registration fee will include lunch and beverages on the days of conference. Entrance for students is free with a valid student ID.
