PHILIPSBURG–United Telecommunication Services (UTS) has provided the Philipsburg Jubilee Library with 25MB broadband internet. The broadband internet was installed prior to the start of the Digi Summer Time Camp, which was held at the library and participants were the first lucky ones to profit from the increased speed at the facility. Camp participants also had the opportunity to visit UTS onsite and learn about the role of technology in the telecommunication business sector. UTS Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Glen Carty had met with representatives of Foresee Foundation and its founder Windsong Foundation and expressed his support for projects that take technology to schools and youth of St. Maarten.
Many students visit the Philipsburg Jubilee Library to do school related work including research and joint assignments etc. “With the increasing connectivity of the internet, libraries have also become global information centres where information is available through a number of resources,” it was stated in a press release.
In 2013, Foresee Foundation and the library collaborated and established a Media lab which accommodated more than 4,000 students in the last few years. Technology workshops were given and internet access played a crucial role.
“With the exponential growth of interesting software which demands higher internet speeds, UTS is filling that gap allowing students and staff to work on exciting projects like coding and programming, graphic design, 3D printing, gaming and much more,” the release said.
Foresee Foundation and the Philipsburg Jubilee Library thank UTS for its “generous support.”
