ST. EUSTATIUS–Statia Carnival Parade brought out the colours on Saturday afternoon as the troupes were decked out in intricate and vibrant outfits. Not to be left out, many junior members were also dressed in colourful costumes in their favourite themes.
Even though the parade started late, a large crowd turned out to see the troupes that came out to participate in Statia’s 54th Carnival.
Five troupes participated in the parade: the Real Carnival Survivors, led by Jovita “Joan” Green; Caribbean Tribes led by Julissa Woodley and Sharday Bennett; Caribbean Opals led by Charmaine George; Multi-mix led by Sjudi Redan and Island Gems led by Daniela Richardson, Gayle Charles and Natasha Richardson.
Caribbean Tribes had a float in the parade depicting the Charlie Brown which was sunk a year ago to create a diving site off the island.
Junior Carnival Queen/Little Miss Statia also had a float in the parade. Junior Carnival Queen Gercia Brown, first runner-up Diagilia Gomez and second runner-up Tinikia Spanner wore their best dresses, together with show promoter Sherees Timber.
Miss Mature Queen Jineidy Bolan also took part in the parade along with third runner-up Rachel Courtar, who was also among those taking part in the parade.
Chief Executive Officer of Island Essence Dihiara Pierre-Arnaud and SXM Airways distributed free drinks to the public lining the streets. Telecommunications company TelCell distributed T-shirts, towels and water until their supply was exhausted. The Police Department provided vehicle and foot patrols for safety.
