ST. EUSTATIUS–Parliamentarians from the Netherlands paid a working visit to St. Eustatius on Friday, during which they went shopping at the island’s largest supermarket with the lowest prices.
The delegation of the Dutch Parliament’s Second Chamber, headed by leader of centre-democrat D66 party Alexander Pechtold, arrived on board of a chartered Winair flight. They were met at F.D. Roosevelt Airport by Government Commissioner Marcolino “Mike” Franco and Acting Government Commissioner Mervyn Stegers.
The visitors from the Netherlands were taken by bus to various planned sites on the island. They visited Historical Fort Oranje, where they were given a tour by local historian Walter Hellebrand.
They also made a stop at Duggins Supermarket where they bought a few items. Comparing prices with those in the Netherlands, parliamentarian Stieneke van der Graaf of Christian Union said she would have paid half the price for the same number of articles in the Netherlands. Van der Graaf said she now understood why residents of Statia were complaining about the high prices of food items on the island.
The visiting delegation also visited Zeelandia, Knippenga, Whaletails and the solar park of St. Eustatius Utility Company STUCO. At Fort de Windt they were explained why the island’s monuments are so important.
The Guyeau Estate project involving a luxury hotel and residential estate was also on the list of visited sites. The parliamentarians also met with members of the Social Advisory Board.
