VSA Minister Claret Connor at SMMC.
CAY HILL--Free breast screenings and other health checks were offered at St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) recently as part of a Women’s Health Day initiative organised in collaboration with the Elektralyets Foundation and Positive Foundation.
Minister of Public Health, Social Development and Labor Claret Connor visited the event in support of the initiative, which also gave various SMMC departments an opportunity to showcase their services and provide visitors with information on healthcare and wellness.
Members of the Minister’s Cabinet also participated in the breast cancer screening initiative to demonstrate their support for early detection and preventive healthcare.
During his visit, Connor spoke with medical and support staff, as well as women who attended the event for screenings. He said he was encouraged by the atmosphere and the participation of those who came out to prioritise their health.
“What stood out to me was the upbeat atmosphere and enthusiasm demonstrated by everyone present. It was encouraging to engage directly with the medical professionals, support staff, and members of the public who came out to prioritise their health. I commend the healthcare professionals and volunteers who dedicated their time and energy to supporting this worthy cause,” Connor stated.
The Minister also encouraged women to make preventive healthcare a priority and seek medical advice about appropriate screenings rather than waiting until they experience symptoms.
“Early detection saves lives, but it begins with taking action. I encourage every woman to make her health a priority. Do not wait until something feels wrong to seek medical advice. Speak with your healthcare provider about appropriate screenings, know your personal risk factors, and encourage your mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends to do the same. Prevention and early detection must become part of our everyday approach to health.”
Connor also highlighted the importance of continued cooperation between healthcare institutions, community organisations and government in promoting a healthier St. Maarten.
The Ministry of VSA is encouraging residents to schedule regular checkups, follow recommended screening guidelines and make use of available preventive healthcare services.
