MARIGOT–The court in Basse-Terre, Guadeloupe, on March 23 sentenced Artélie Warno to 18 years in prison for the murder of Marc-Antoine Francois at a bar in Hameau du Pont, Marigot, on the night of September 5, 2015.
According to a court transcript from Guadeloupe Justice, the judge sided with the jury in condemning Warno to three extra years, going beyond the Attorney General’s demand for 15 years. This was because of Warno’s attitude and arrogance on the stand, when he frequently changed his story, denied he was ever present at the bar despite earlier saying he was at the bar but had nothing to do with the murder, and attempted to manipulate the jury with lies.
Warno (24) was condemned for stabbing Marc-Antoine Francois, an alcoholic and drug addict, to death in the bar “Le Cucurucho” at around midnight in Hameau du Pont. Despite his denials, traces of DNA from the victim were found on his clothing and witnesses testified that Warno murdered Francois.
Warno’s lawyer pleaded innocence. The accused has 10 days in which he can appeal the verdict.
