PHILIPSBURG–“Recycle, Reduce, Reuse,” is the motto of Waste Factory St. Maarten which is to open its doors at Front Street, next to Art Craft Café Gallery near Emmaplein, on Saturday.
In an effort to reduce garbage and to create awareness about the fact that recycling is not a fashion but a bare necessity, Waste Factory, an initiative of Art Craft Café Gallery proprietor Tess Verheij, will start with the collection of glass, paper, plastics and Styrofoam which will be recycled in an open-studio setting.
With the recycled materials new products will be handmade with the use of a 3D printer. The collected plastics will be shredded and melted with the use of machines, to be remodelled into new products, such as gift items and souvenirs for tourists to show the public that waste still has value.
Workshops will be given to show how to make something new out of waste. Saturday’s opening of Waste Factory will be marked by one-hour walk-in workshops, between 9:30am and 12:30pm and between 2:30pm and 4:30pm.
The programme will consist of different upcycle projects, Verheij explained. There will also be guided tours throughout the Waste Factory.
Waste Factory is in need of volunteers for the collection of plastic, paper and glass for the separation and cleaning of these products; for the shredding and melting of the final product and for promotional activities. The Factory is also seeking creative minds to lead workshops, handymen, women and technicians.
Clean-up activities at beaches and in the hills and cooperation with hotels and restaurants are in the planning. Persons interested in Waste Factory may call tel. 580-0462 or send an email to wastefactorysintmaarten@gmail.com.
