Revellers being wet down at the end of Sandy Road.
ST. EUSTATIUS–A large energetic crowd hit the streets of St. Eustatius on Easter Monday morning for the Rebels HD Band Jouvert Morning Wet Down Jam, which started in the early morning hours.
Ras Kelly & Rhythm Band from St. Kitts entertained the large crowd. Those Jouvert Morning revellers who wanted to be wet down flocked to the area where the water was being poured, while others ran out of the reach of the spraying water.
Many revellers came directly from the Big People Party which was held at 318 Right Fields from 9:00pm. Revellers comprised locals, as well as persons who travelled from St. Kitts, St. Maarten, Saba, Curaçao, Bonaire and many other islands.
An incident took place during the final leg of the Wet Down at the corner of Sandy Road and Van Tonningenweg when a driver of a vehicle decided he could not wait to get to his destination and attempted to drive into the crowd of revellers. Police officers were seen driving in patrol vehicles, but none were on foot during that incident.
An off-duty Border Patrol Officer, who was on the scene, intervened and prevented what could have turned into a bad situation. The Officer approached the driver of the vehicle and instructed him that he could not pass.
The driver of this vehicle attempted to drive into the crowd.
Persons in the crowd started to become angry at the situation as quite a few persons had brought their young children to witness the fun.
People who have to go to Lower Town on Easter Monday have to arrive ahead of time, especially those changing shifts at the Harbour. These persons must get to Lower Town before the revellers reach the corner of Sandy Road.
The Jouvert Wet Down ended at NuStar playground at 6:59am. Afterwards, two Police vehicles arrived and escorted the Jouvert morning vehicle with the Band to the Lower Town. The driver of the vehicle who attempted to drive through the crowd was seen driving behind the Police escort.
