Wever responds to overflowing garbage bins in Betty’s Estate | THE DAILY HERALD

Clean garbage bins on Camelia Road in Betty’s Estate.

BETTY’S ESTATE–After learning that the company contracted to clean Camelia Road in Betty’s Estate had not done so, for unknown reasons, Public Housing, Spatial Planning, Environment and Infrastructure VROMI Minister Chris Wever said he had dispatched an alternate contractor to the area at 6:00am Saturday, November 2.

A photo appeared in The Daily Herald on Friday, November 1, which depicted garbage piled up near a utilities company GEBE meter box on Camelia Road, with wild plants growing in the area.

It appears from residents’ account that the company contracted to do the cleaning had not collected the garbage for some time, leaving it to accumulate and create what they called an “unbearable” smell.

“Another contractor was appointed to have the situation rectified. The contractor was sent to the area on November 2, at 6:00am, to service the metal bins that the current contractor failed to clean and to pick up all the bulky waste in the entire parcel six,” said Wever in a press release.

He said the new contractor had been hired until 6:00pm Tuesday, November 5.

Some changes had to be made because of the latest developments in Betty’s Estate, according to Wever.

He also said the VROMI Ministry would be monitoring the situation in Betty’s Estate and throughout St. Maarten to ensure that “those contracted to clean are doing the work as prescribed within their contract.”

VROMI recently started a clean-up campaign designed to get the entire community involved in creating clean neighbourhoods. “Health and cleanliness are integral parts of the redevelopment of the people of St. Maarten and must remain a priority,” said Wever on Sunday.
