WIB launches first MasterCard Fun Miles credit card with chip

PHILIPSBURG–Windward Islands Bank (WIB) is putting more fun and savings in the hands of its clients with the launch of its “My Card – WIB’s MasterCard Fun Miles Credit Card.”

The bank has partnered with MasterCard and Fun Miles to create a special card for clients which promotes St. Maarten and enables its clients to build up Fun Miles points each time they use their card. Miles accrued can be used to purchase items from any Fun Miles partner to obtain items such as groceries, gas, jewellery, household items, home repair, electric, plumbing materials, McDonalds and a host of other items.

WIB’s Managing Director Derek Downes said the bank has been working on this initiative for the past two years and was happy to see it come to fruition. He said WIB had noticed a positive effect since it partnered with Fun Miles and enabled its Maestro cardholders to link their cards with their Fun Miles Card to earn miles. The bank has noticed an 11 to 12 per cent increase annually in the usage of its Maestro Debit Cards since it has teamed up with Fun Miles. He said the bank is hoping to see customers make use of the MasterCard credit card to get even more miles.

Anyone can apply for the MasterCard Fun Miles Credit Card at WIB. The same criteria as applying for any credit card will apply. Once the credit card holder has a Fun Miles card, they can “link” the MasterCard to their Fun Miles Card, to be able to accrue miles on all purchases made. For every US $2 spent on the card, cardholders will get one Fun Mile. Therefore, cardholders can increase their points with purchases made locally or internationally, as well as with online purchases.

Downes said the MasterCard Fun Miles Credit Card is unique and contains a map outline of St. Maarten and Globe to indicate its worldwide acceptance. The card also has a silhouette of people enjoying themselves and has a “beautiful sunset-strip” in the centre similar to that of a “beautiful sunset” in St. Maarten.

WIB said it used local talent to make the card from conceptualisation to design and indicated that it is “a made in St. Maarten product.” Local graphic designer Souraine Hazel designed the card and the advertisement jingle was done by local musician Dion Gumbs.

WIB will also give 250 Fun Miles to clients with first time use of the card. “The more you use the card the more you earn Fun Miles,” WIB said.

The card also has an EMV Certified Chip for better security. An annual fee of $60 will be charged for the MasterCard. Clients who lose their cards will have to pay $15 for a replacement. Clients also get balance protection insurance on their cards as well as fraud protection insurance. Clients can visit any WIB branch to apply for their MasterCard Fun Miles Credit Card.
