PHILIPSBURG--The Workers Institute for Organised Labour (WIFOL) has launched a search for a new union leader, inviting interested persons to submit expressions of interest as the organisation moves toward electing new leadership.

According to the notice, the successful candidate should demonstrate "integrity to uphold what is right and lead by example, trust to build confidence and earn respect, and skills to make informed decisions and drive positive change."

The call for a new leader comes after WIFOL members announced plans to convene a Congress and elect a new Board. Members have accused current President Theophilus Thompson of failing to convene a Congress for more than a decade, not holding Board elections and failing to provide financial accountability to the union's membership.

According to WIFOL co-founder René Richardson, members intend to rely on Article 10 of the union's Constitution to convene a Congress and elect a new Board after repeated correspondence to Thompson allegedly went unanswered.

A criminal complaint has also been filed with the Public Prosecutor against Thompson.
