Winair evacuation flights to Statia started

Commissioner Charles A. Woodley

ST. EUSTATIUS–Windward Islands Airways International Winair commenced evacuation flights to St. Eustatius from St. Maarten this morning.

St. Eustatius Government had initially intended to use a ferry service to get its residents and others out of monster Hurricane Irma-ravaged St. Maarten, Commissioner Charles A. Woodley said.

The flights linking St. Maarten and Statia via Princess Juliana International Airport SXM will continue until further notice.

There is a long waiting time at the airport. Passengers are encouraged to bring enough bottled water and food to last through the day.

Passengers are permitted one piece of luggage per person and must have with them all relevant travel documents.

Residents who want to send care packages to their families in St. Maarten can send these via Winair. Items must be properly addressed and delivered to the designated personnel at the airport in Statia.

Further information about retrieval of the items in St. Maarten will be available via Winair’s website. Only limited items will be airlifted to St. Maarten.
