WITU to remind Wuite of promise

PHILIPSBURG–Windward Islands Teachers Union (WITU) will be sending a letter to Education Minister Jorien Wuite to remind her about the promise made to address the union’s concerns regarding teachers’ salary scales.

WITU President Claire Elshot said at a press conference on Wednesday that the union has not heard back from Wuite since meeting with her in January about the matter. Following the meeting in January, the union put in writing its proposal for a committee be put in place to review the salary scales.

“We did not see any actions coming out of our request for a committee to be established. The committee was supposed to have been established via a ministerial decree. We will repeat our request for the committee to be put in place as soon as possible,” Elshot told The Daily Herald after the press conference. She said the letter would be sent out by today, Wednesday.

Wuite had told reporters after the meeting with WITU that the union had raised a number of concerns during its meeting with her, such as the extended workdays, vacation days in the summer, fatigue, compensation and the value of teachers in society.

She said at the time that it was important to have these reviewed and discussed extensively. She said also that a “good,” “sound” and “constructive agreement” had been made with the union on the way forward in addressing these matters.
