COLE BAY–Yacht Club Port de Plaisance hosted a lunch on Saturday for 65 senior citizens from Home Away from Home Foundation at the newly-opened Court Side Café in the Country Club of Port de Plaisance.
The gesture was a follow-up to the US $4,000 donation made to the Foundation at the third annual St. Maarten Rendezvous held at the Yacht Club last week. Home Away from Home Foundation was the Yacht Club’s chosen charity to receive the funds.
The group of seniors was scheduled to visit Rain Forest Adventures in the morning with SXM DOET, but as Marina Management Consulting (MMC) Marketing Manager Sharita Mills explained, SXM DOET informed them there was insufficient funding in place for the seniors to have lunch.
“Fortunately, we were able to step in to sponsor their lunch in cooperation with Court Side Café and to give them a good time,” said Mills.
President of Home Away from Home Foundation Patricia Flanders said the buffet lunch was very much appreciated.
“Not all of our seniors from the foundation are here as some are afraid of heights at the zip line activity” explained Flanders, “but the rest came. About 90 percent of them took the chair lift to the top to admire the views and atmosphere, and to take pictures, while others stayed at the bottom.
“To have lunch afterwards is perfect because that’s what they look forward to. Seniors look forward to a lot of things, eating, activities, bus tours and outings. I do as much as I can to not make them feel alone at home, but to go out and enjoy themselves. I would like to thank Yacht Club Port de Plaisance and SXM DOET without whom we would not be here today.”
André Mungo from Court Side Café said the café is currently open for breakfast but will shortly be open for lunch and dinner. The café is run by a subsidiary of Boca Marina and is open to the public, tennis club members and for parties.
