PHILIPSBURG–Carnival troupe pioneer Gordon Yee recently returned to the island after suffering two strokes early in 2017. The 22-year Carnival troupe leader had a slow recovery and was not able to participate in this year’s Carnival parades.
Yee said on Wednesday that he has to return for Carnival 50 in 2019, as Carnival has always been special to him and those who participate in his troupe annually. “Tributes to SXM Carnival 50” is the theme for his eight-section troupe. He also plans to present the customary individual pieces with queen costumes.
“It took a while for my health to get better but when I noticed that Carnival 50 is around the corner, I started to focus all my attention towards getting a troupe together once again to show my respect to the island I love. The troupe will pay tribute to revellers who participated in our troupe for years, with some designs making a comeback,” said Yee on Wednesday.
He is calling all those who never participated in carnival troupes along with his regular mas jumpers to take part in his Carnival 50 troupe. Carnival is a big part of St. Maarten and to pay respect to 50 years, it is only right that persons join a troupe and have fun, he said.
Interested persons can call Yee at 580-5619.
