NETHERLANDS--Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport (ECYS) Melissa Gumbs on Monday confirmed that the 25 St. Maarten students who departed over the weekend have arrived safely in the Netherlands. The Minister met the students at Schiphol. Minister Plenipotentiary Gracita Arrindell was also present.
The students landed at Schiphol Airport without incident, though understandably a bit tired after their long journey. Upon arrival, they were transported to the hotel where they will be staying for the next couple of days before heading off to their respective cities to begin their studies.
Minister Gumbs joined the students later that day for their official welcome and orientation session, which took place at 5:30 p.m. The students were introduced to their district guidance counselors as well as representatives of WeConnect, an organization dedicated to supporting students from the Dutch Caribbean. WeConnect offers ongoing workshops, provides information, and serves as a resource for students as they navigate their first year abroad.
The orientation also featured a contribution from Isaiah Nunez, a current student in the Netherlands, who offered helpful advice on navigating the first year of study and adjusting to independent life. He encouraged the group to not only focus on academics, but also take time to discover who they are as individuals now living on their own.
During the session, Minister Gumbs shared brief remarks with the group, encouraging them to stay focused on their goals and reminding them that they had already proven their resilience by reaching this milestone. She expressed that the people of St. Maarten are already proud of them and urged them to strive to make themselves proud through their continued dedication and personal growth.
The students are scheduled to participate in additional preparatory workshops in the days ahead, including finalizing administrative matters such as travel arrangements and documentation required by Dutch agencies.
Minister Gumbs expressed confidence in the orientation process and the support system in place, and wished the students a smooth transition as they prepare for this new chapter in their academic journey.
