GREAT BAY--Member of Parliament Sjamira D.M. Roseburg marked Justice Day by extending her appreciation to the professionals who serve throughout St. Maarten’s justice chain and by calling for continued efforts to build a system grounded in fairness, dignity and public trust.
Roseburg recognised police officers, prosecutors, judges, attorneys, prison and probation officers, victim support workers, court staff, customs and immigration officers, and all other professionals who work daily to uphold justice and the rule of law.
She thanked them for their dedication, professionalism and service to the community.
Roseburg also used the occasion to acknowledge the many people who depend on the justice system, including victims seeking healing, families searching for answers, witnesses who find the courage to come forward and individuals working to rebuild their lives.
“Justice belongs to all of us because, at some point in life, we all hope to be treated fairly, heard, and protected,” Roseburg said.
As both a Member of Parliament and an attorney, Roseburg said justice has always held a special place in her heart. She stressed that justice should not be understood only through laws, courtrooms and legal procedures, but also through the treatment of people and the confidence they place in public institutions.
“To me, justice is about more than laws and courtrooms. It is about people, dignity, fairness, and ensuring that our institutions continue to earn the trust of the community they serve,” she said.
Roseburg referred to the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who said: “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”
She said the quote serves as a reminder that justice is strengthened each day through integrity, compassion and a commitment to doing what is right.
Roseburg called on everyone within and outside the justice sector to continue working together to strengthen a system that protects, supports and serves all members of society.
“Whether we work within the justice chain or rely on it, we each have a role to play in building a safer, fairer, and more compassionate St. Maarten,” she said.
She concluded by wishing justice-sector professionals and the wider community a meaningful and blessed Justice Day.
