GREAT BAY--Member of Parliament Sjamira Roseburg is calling for greater awareness, compassion and understanding surrounding mental health, urging the St. Maarten community to break the silence and stigma that often prevent individuals from seeking the help and support they need.

In her message marking World Mental Health Day, observed annually on October 10, Roseburg emphasized that mental well-being deserves the same attention and importance as physical health, particularly as many individuals continue to struggle privately with emotional and psychological challenges.

"Today, on World Mental Health Day, I join people around the world in affirming a simple but important truth: mental health matters just as much as physical health," Roseburg stated.

The MP expressed concern that fear of judgment, misunderstanding and social stigma continue to discourage people from speaking openly about their struggles, creating an environment in which individuals may feel compelled to face difficult circumstances alone.

"Too many people in our community carry their struggles in silence, out of fear of being judged or misunderstood. As a society, we must work to break that silence," she said.

Roseburg emphasized that creating a more supportive society requires changing attitudes toward mental health and ensuring that individuals who seek assistance are met with understanding rather than criticism.

A particular concern for the MP is the mental and emotional well-being of young people, many of whom face personal, social and emotional pressures that may not always be apparent to parents, teachers or other adults in their lives.

She stressed the importance of creating safe environments where young people feel comfortable expressing their concerns, discussing their experiences and seeking guidance without fear of being dismissed or judged.

"Our youth deserve to feel heard, to know that their feelings are valid, and to have safe spaces where they can speak openly and find support," Roseburg stated.

She further emphasized that listening to young people and taking their concerns seriously should be regarded as an investment in the country's future.

Beyond institutional and professional support, Roseburg called on residents to recognize the important role that families, friends, neighbors and colleagues can play in supporting someone experiencing emotional difficulties.

She encouraged individuals to make a conscious effort to check on the people around them, explaining that meaningful conversations, genuine attention and simple acts of kindness can have a significant impact on someone's well-being.

The MP also urged residents not to overlook their own mental health while caring for others, emphasizing the importance of rest, self-compassion and recognizing when additional support may be necessary.

"It is okay not to be okay, and seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness," she stated.

Roseburg also expressed appreciation for the mental health professionals, counselors, community organizations and volunteers who provide support and assistance to individuals and families across St. Maarten.

She recognized their continued contributions to the well-being of the community and the importance of their work in helping individuals navigate difficult periods in their lives.

As World Mental Health Day is observed, Roseburg encouraged the community to ensure that mental health awareness and compassion extend beyond a single commemorative occasion and become part of everyday interactions.

"On this World Mental Health Day, and every day, let us remember: no one should have to struggle alone. Your mental health matters," Roseburg concluded.
