GREAT BAY--TamLeo Books has launched a month-long community literacy initiative aimed at getting more children across St. Maarten excited about reading while encouraging parents, teachers and the wider community to make books a greater part of everyday life.
The initiative, “Turn the Page, SXM,” is being held throughout September in recognition of Literacy Month and will feature activities in schools, community spaces and homes across the island. It is designed to encourage young readers to spend more time with books while reminding families that developing strong reading habits is a shared responsibility.
At the heart of the campaign is a simple message: every page turned represents an investment in a child’s future.
Reading helps children expand their vocabulary, strengthen comprehension, explore new ideas and develop their imagination. TamLeo Books noted, however, that nurturing a love for reading cannot be left to children alone. Parents who make time for stories at home, teachers who create engaging reading experiences and communities that improve access to books all have an important role to play.
With screens now firmly embedded in everyday life, Turn the Page, SXM is not seeking to remove technology from childhood. Instead, the campaign is encouraging families to create space for books alongside digital devices and to remind children that opening a story can be just as engaging as opening an app.
Three main activities will form the foundation of the initiative during September.
Turn the Page Storytime will bring interactive reading experiences to selected schools and community spaces, allowing children to enjoy stories together in settings designed to make reading engaging and social.
The Great Book Stack Classroom Challenge will encourage classrooms across St. Maarten to keep reading throughout the month. As students complete books and stories, participating classes will add to their book stacks and creatively document their progress.
The Turn the Page Family Challenge will extend the campaign into homes, encouraging parents and caregivers to intentionally set aside time to read with their children and make storytime a regular part of family life.
Both challenges will continue throughout Literacy Month, giving families and classrooms an opportunity to build momentum as September progresses. The campaign will officially conclude on September 30, with challenge winners and prizes to be announced shortly afterward.
Through Turn the Page, SXM, TamLeo Books hopes to contribute to wider efforts to strengthen literacy in St. Maarten while also helping children develop a relationship with reading that continues beyond Literacy Month.
The initiative stresses that stronger readers are built not only through formal education, but through what happens at home, in classrooms and throughout the community, one child, one story and one page at a time.
