GREAT BAY--Minister of Public Health, Social Development and Labor (VSA), Hon. Claret Connor, visited the St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) on Saturday in support of its Women’s Health Day initiative, organized in collaboration with the Elektralyets Foundation and Positive Foundation.

The initiative provided women with access to free breast screenings and additional health screenings, while various departments at the medical center showcased their services and shared information on healthcare, wellness and preventive measures. The event also served as an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of early detection and encourage women to take a more proactive approach to their overall health.

Members of the Minister’s Cabinet also participated in the breast cancer screening initiative, demonstrating their support for preventive healthcare and the importance of leading by example.

During his visit, Minister Connor interacted with SMMC medical professionals, support staff, volunteers and women attending the screenings. He expressed appreciation for the collaborative effort behind the initiative and said he was particularly encouraged by the positive atmosphere and enthusiasm displayed throughout the event.

“What stood out to me was the upbeat atmosphere and enthusiasm demonstrated by everyone present. It was encouraging to engage directly with the medical professionals, support staff, and members of the public who came out to prioritize their health. I commend the healthcare professionals and volunteers who dedicated their time and energy to supporting this worthy cause,” Minister Connor stated.

The Minister emphasized that initiatives such as Women’s Health Day play an important role in encouraging residents to take preventive healthcare seriously, particularly when it comes to conditions such as breast cancer, where timely detection and medical intervention can significantly improve treatment outcomes.

“Early detection saves lives, but it begins with taking action. I encourage every woman to make her health a priority. Do not wait until something feels wrong to seek medical advice. Speak with your healthcare provider about appropriate screenings, know your personal risk factors, and encourage your mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends to do the same. Prevention and early detection must become part of our everyday approach to health.”

Minister Connor also reaffirmed the importance of continued collaboration between healthcare institutions, community organizations and government in improving access to healthcare services and promoting healthier lifestyles throughout St. Maarten.

The Ministry of VSA encourages all residents to take proactive steps toward maintaining their health by scheduling regular medical checkups, following recommended screening guidelines and making use of available preventive healthcare services.

The Ministry stressed that awareness, education and access to timely medical care must remain priorities beyond Breast Cancer Awareness Month, as efforts to promote prevention and early detection are essential to building a healthier St. Maarten.
