PHILIPSBURG:--- The K1 Britannia Foundation would like to celebrate “International Volunteer Day” by highlighting the involvement of teenagers in the community.
International Volunteer Day (IVD) was designated by the United Nations on December 5th, 1985 as an international observance day to celebrate the power and potential of volunteerism.
The 2016 theme is “Global Applause” and it is only fitting that teenagers are applauded for being active in the community.
The K1 Britannia volunteer program is designed to give everyone the opportunity to get involved with making a difference by connecting those that have a desire to help with various local charitable organizations and projects that need their hands-on assistance.
One of the special focuses of our volunteer program is teenage students, as we believe that the youth are the future of the island. The program provides challenging opportunities for teenage students to be active in community service in the areas that are of interest to them.
The K1 Britannia volunteer program boasts over 375 volunteers of which 57% are teenagers which show that the youth are looking for ways to give back. The volunteer program includes students from St. Dominic High School, St. Dominic IB Program, St. Maarten Academy –Academic & PSVE, Milton Peters College, St. Dominic High School, Learning Unlimited, Caribbean International Academy (CIA) and so much more.
Volunteering is a great way for our youth to develop skills, get exposed to various issues and challenges on the island and broaden their view of the world.
Over this past year, our teenage volunteers have given back via SXM DOET, multiple beach cleanups, spa day with the elderly, spending St. Maarten’s Day with foster children, tutoring and in many other ways.
The teenagers have shown great patience, respect, genuine care, teamwork, leadership, dependability and other great qualities which will enable them to become the right kind of leaders of the future with a heart for others and a conviction that they can help to change things.
The foundation is happy to see so many teenagers actively contributing their time and skills and look forward to seeing more teenagers get active, grow and ultimately changed through their good works in the community.
