PHILIPSBURG:--- The National Institute of Arts- NIA, in collaboration with Dynamix Association led by Julien Seguret, hosted a dance workshop over weekend November 26th -27th with Mariam Traore, African a dancer and instructor, from Burkina Faso a French speaking country that is located in West Africa,
Mariam is currently on a tour through the Caribbean where she is conducting classes in the rhythm and dances of Burkina Faso to the Caribbean. Mariam will spend a week in St. Maarten before going back to Guadalupe to continue with the tour, before returning to Africa for December 10. In addition to the Weekend workshop Mariam and partner Fabian gave a master class to some 20 NIA Students on Wednesday, November 30.
Mariam, NIA and Dynamix Association collaborated on an all day dance workshop that became a cultural exchange in dance and music, of two countries that are miles apart but similar in the spirit of dance. The local dancers kept in rhythm and step with Marian as she taught the energetic dance of her country. Musical accompaniment included various drums and a stringed instrument called the Kora.
NIA was proud to partner with Dynamic Association and the talented dancer like Mariam Traore, who impacted and inspired the local dancers to become better at their craft. NIA will be hosting more workshops with an international artist in the future; the public is invited to follow the NIA on Facebook and through press releases in the newspaper.
