St. Maarten – It’s official: Commissioner Carl Marcuson John has been appointed as the successor of Chief Commissioner Peter de Witte as the chief of the national police force of St. Maarten. Governor Drs. Eugène Holiday signed the national decree that seals the appointment last week Thursday, but the Justice Ministry released the information yesterday.

The position of chief commissioner became available, “after the former chief of police, Peter de Witte, voluntarily kept his promise to vacate the position after five years in favor of the appointment of a qualified local candidate,” the press release states.

“The government acknowledges the contributions and sacrifices he (De Witte – ed.) has made for the development of the national police force of St. Maarten.”

An independent selection committee unanimously recommended Carl john for the top job. Based on this recommendation and the advice of Justice Minister Dennis Richardson, the Council of Ministers unanimously agreed to the appointment of John.

“The government congratulates Mr. John with this appointment and is convinced that he is capable of taking the police force to its next level of development,” the press release from the Justice Ministry states.”

The oath taking and transfer of authority ceremony still has to take place, but this will follow shortly.

Peter de Witte remains in the service of Country St. Maarten. He will execute several special assignments for the Ministry of Justice.
