St. Maarten – Gebe experienced faults on several transmission cables to the eastern side of the island yesterday. This led to outages from as early as 5 a.m.  “The main transmission cables feeding the two substations in the Philipsburg and Zagersgut area were out of power due to fault indications.” The utilities company said in a brief press statement. “Another area that was affected was the Simpson Bay area.”

Gebe technicians worked from the early hours of the morning to isolate and identify the damaged cables. At 12:30 p.m. the eastern side of the island was back to normal with the exception of the Sucker Garden, Guana Bay and Simpson Bay / Airport areas.

All areas except the Simpson Bay / Airport areas were back to normal by 12:50 p.m. The technicians immediately started to localize the fault in the Simpson Bay area in order to energize the cable and give the people back electricity. The identification of the faulted transmission cables has begun and they will be repaired as soon as possible.
