St. Maarten News – Ky-Mani Marley – indeed, the son of – headlines Carnival’s One Love reggae night concert on April 28 in the Carnival Village.
Marley will be joined by lovers rock star Alaine, Romain Virgo and dancehall star Demarco. Complimenting those international acts will be St. Maarten’s BettiV and Mix Master Pauly. “We are very excited about the event. The reggae genre is huge in Carnival and we wanted to give lovers of the genre a terrific experience. It is headlined by a Marley, so enough said,” project leader Keianna Liburd said. “We have a lot of information to share so everyone should stay tuned and get ready for an incredible show.”
Marley’s music is what one would expect if his father Bob Marley grew up during the hip hop generation. The roots, rock and reggae are still there; but so is the swagger of a hip-hop artist. In addition, to following his father’s footsteps as a recording artist, Marley also has a successful career in film and television with starring roles in the cult classic Shottas and the reality series Living the Life of Marley.
Ky-Mani Marley’s also just released his new album entitled Maestro, the sixth studio set from the Jamaican-born reggae artist. Over a dozen tracks, Marley glides between sojourns of love and high times to calls for action and messages of faith. It may sound like familiar territory that’s been mined in reggae before, but with the help of some friends and family, and a slew of masters behind the board, it plays as fresh and relevant.
Singer/songwriter Alaine possesses a sweet voice, songwriting skills that show a depth of experiences and a smile that could brighten any day. Her music is a mixture of traditional Jamaican dancehall/reggae rhythms combined with writing and vocal arrangements that showcase her R&B/hip hop influences. Her song ‘No Ordinary Love’ hit reggae charts across the world including, New York, Florida, Japan, Europe and the Caribbean.
After signing to VP records in February of 2010, Romain Virgo released his much anticipated album that bears his name in the summer of the same year to critical acclaim. The 15-track album provided the much-needed positive messages aimed at young people, as written and sung by one of their own. “Young people listen mostly to young people, so I don’t see anything wrong in singing something positive because it will help to change this whole negative vibe,” says Romain.
Not only was it positive, the album showed a myriad of Romain’s moods. From love songs to conscious lyrics his debut offers several sensitively sung romantic selections reflecting love, loneliness, attraction and betrayal. Fearless, outspoken and artistic, Virgo still remains humble as he climbs the ladder of success.
Since then the talented young singer has continued to build a rich catalogue of what will become longstanding reggae favorites including, Rich In Love, Taking You Home, I Know Better, System and Don’t You Remember.
Demarco is a Jamaican dancehall reggae artist in demand for his consistent stream of hits including “I Love My Life” and “Puppy Tail”. The latter of which spawned a viral dance craze with girls (including Rihanna) uploading their version of the Puppy Tail dance to YouTube and Instagram.
An accomplished producer/musician Demarco emerged as a performer with the hit singles “Fallen Soldiers” and “Duppy Know Who Fi Frighten”. He is available on track and with live band. Demand for his live performances has led to bookings in Africa, Australia, and Europe and beyond. His versatility can be heard on his such as “Love a Come Down”.
