Cupecoy, Sint Maarten — On Saturday, July 8th the children of American University of the Caribbean Medical School students got a firsthand lesson of their own in how to react in an emergency. The students of the Pediatric Interest Group teamed up with Red Cross St. Maarten to host a First Aid workshop.
The pediatric Interest Group at AUC is for students who think they want to become Pediatricians once they have finished Medical School. They hold different events throughout the semester centered on working with the local orphanages and working with St. Maarten player development.
Red Cross St. Maarten First Aid Instructor Othneilia Binns, Water Safety Instructor Travin Joseph and Youth Chapter Vice President Nadricia Liburd used activities to teach the children techniques for things like dressing a wound, treating cuts or burns, and how to assist someone when they’re choking.
The young students enjoyed learning valuable lessons about First Aid, and also getting a glimpse at what their parents are learning while attending medical school. Red Cross St. Maarten thanks the Pediatric Interest Group and is looking forward to future collaborations.
