The American company Southwest inaugurated a new route on Tuesday between Princess Juliana Airport and the cities of Orlando in Florida and Baltimore in Maryland, with several weekly rotations.
Greeted by the traditional water cannons upon its arrival on the tarmac at Princess Juliana Airport, the landing of the airline’s Boeing 737 marked the official opening of this new route. Southwest offers up to 11 flights per week: a daily flight to Orlando and a weekend connection to Baltimore.
Based in Dallas, Texas, the company, well-established in the American domestic market, already connects some 40 cities in the United States and around 100 destinations worldwide. “This is the right time of year to allow people to travel here,” emphasizes Adam Decaire, one of Southwest’s vice presidents, adding that Sint Maarten was among the most requested destinations by customers.
For the airport, this arrival is the culmination of a long process. “The decision for Southwest Airlines to serve Sint Maarten is the result of work undertaken for more than 14 years,” recalled its CEO, Michael Cleaver, during the press conference held for the event.
Upon disembarking, the 130 passengers were greeted in a Caribbean atmosphere, to the sound of a steel pan. For Valérie Damaseau, president of the French side’s Tourist Office, this new service strengthens the island’s appeal, both for French and Dutch visitors: “The development of air connectivity benefits our entire tourism ecosystem.” Furthermore, this new route also greatly simplifies travel for Saint Martin residents living in the United States. _DR
