Last month, the ACS ZEPIN association organized a kayaking escapade to delve into the history and nature of Saint-Martin, following in the footsteps of the Tainos. Two groups of 25 participants explored the Simpson Bay lagoon, once crossed by canoe by Native Americans, from the 14th century until after the 1600s.
Along the crossing, young and old discovered a dense flora of mangroves, a varied marine fauna and birds such as the egret or the osprey, with an enriching stopover on Grand Îlet. The stories guided the kayakers through local history, including anecdotes about emblematic sites such as the Juliana airport. This activity is part of the "History Caravan", a program supported by the Collectivité, which aims to enrich the historical and cultural knowledge of the island. Upon arrival, a friendly lunch welcomed the participants, followed by a fun quiz to win craft and sea-related prizes. ACS ZEPIN warmly thanks its partners, including Loto Presse Tabac Mont Vernon, the guide Xavier, the volunteers, and the lifeguard Anthony. Last Sunday, other participants went on an adventure for a day on the island's slavery history, coupled with activities at Emilio Johan Wilson Park. More photos soon! _VX
