The launch of the book ‘The Last Frontier: The Orleans Quarter by Sir Roland Richardson’ met a resounding success Last Saturday at the Amuseum Naturalis, in the heart of The Old House. Organized by the Les Fruits de Mer association, the event brought together a A large audience, spanning all generations., came to discover this work blending art and local history.
 
Although the artist Roland Richardson was absent from the territory and unable to participate in the book signing, his presence was felt through every page of the book. Produced in collaboration with Amuseum co-founder, Mark YokoyamaThe book offers an immersion in Orleans district through an original combination of paintings, engravings, sketches and oral history narratives.
A living memory carried by oral history
One of the book’s unique features lies in its narrative approachThe texts are taken directly from interviews with the artist, reflecting his memories. in his own words, in Saint Martin English, then translated into French. A choice praised for its ability to preserve the authenticity of the local voice and to transmit a living memory of the territory.
The book also reveals the artistic perspective Roland Richardson’s work on his environment, particularly through scenes of daily life and iconic architectural elements. Among the anecdotes shared at the launch, Mark Yokoyama mentioned the artist’s ingenuitycapable of drawing in mirror image to guarantee a perfect print result. Beyond the content, the event aimed to be friendly and accessible, with a free distribution of the book accompanied by local sweets, including banana cake, oat-cranberry cookies and cheese sticks.
Building on this enthusiasm, the Les Fruits de Mer association is already planning to to extend this series of oral history books, with future volumes devoted to Grand Case, even at Marigot, other places dear to the artist. Through this project, a whole collective memory is transmitted, between art, testimony, and the identity of Saint-Martin. _Vx
