CULTURE / Georgey Souchette: “Coming back to dance and pass on my knowledge here has a special meaning” | FAXINFO

Organized by the Ö and Co company as part of its socio-educational activities, a free workshop Modern’Jazz was held last Saturday, from 10am to 12pm, at The Vibe studio in Hope Estate. Led by Saint-Martin dancer and choreographer Georgey Souchette, now a teacher at George Bizet Conservatory in Paris, this workshop, which had enjoyed great success in the winter of 2025, brought together dancers from the island for a time of transmission, sharing and artistic exploration. Interview.

Why was this collaboration with the company Ö and Co important to you?
Georgey Souchette “Every time I come back to Saint-Martin, I really feel this desire to share dance and connect with the island’s dancers. The connection with the Ö and Co company came about very naturally. Farah (Viotty, the company’s director) and I started dancing together here. We always wanted to do something together, without necessarily knowing in what form. Then there was the meeting with Peggy (Oulerich, the company’s choreographer). I greatly admire her work, her career, and everything she does with young people in Saint-Martin. Artistically, we share many similarities, particularly in the blending of styles and in the openness to other disciplines such as theater, music, and visual arts. Everything happened very organically.”

What is your perspective on your career and your beginnings in dance?
“My first dance steps took place here, in the studio, with Evelyne FlemingAt the time, I had no idea that dance would become my path in life. Today, I feel a great deal of recognition and gratitude. Returning to Saint-Martin is also about showing young people that, even from a small island, many things are possible. There is an enormous amount of talent here, and we must continue to nurture this wealth and broaden their horizons.”

What was the objective of this second workshop?
“The idea was to summarize a vast range of possibilities in two hours. To explore Afro-Caribbean influences, American modern dance, and European contemporary dance. Improvisation was essential: improvising for oneself, to discover one’s movement capabilities, but also improvising within the group. The circle allows for connection, exchange, and mutual enrichment. What the other person offers inevitably influences what I will contribute in turn.”

What does this type of encounter bring you as an artist and educator?
“These moments help me progress as much as the dancers. I discover new ways of transmitting, new energies. There is a real continuity that is created with the dancers of Saint-Martin, and it is very powerful. The theme of the session was also to deepen the work on body perceptions, to address more technical elements such as floor mobility and physical commitment.”

Is a sequel already being considered?
“Yes, clearly. This second edition confirms the desire and enthusiasm.”
Never two without three! _Vx
