CULTURE – SOCIETY: Zion, a mirror of our collective responsibilities | FAXINFO

Last Friday, the Grand Case Beach Club was sold out for the film screening and discussion Zion, organized by the associations ANIS and ALEFPA – Le Manteau, in partnership with the Mission Locale and the company Ö & Co. A bilingual French-English evening, marked by dense and frank discussions about violence, of social responsibility and levers of prevention, well beyond just the young audience.

Done by Nelson Foix, Zion explore the The turning point of a young man faced with crucial choices, in a tense social environment. While the film is set in Guadeloupe, its message has immediately resonated in Saint-Martin. “If Zion “It shows a Guadeloupean reality, it is a reality that exists in our country,” emphasized Farah Viotty, director of the company Ö & Co and master of ceremonies.

Crime: an issue that concerns the whole of society
During the debate, the executive producer Alex Lafleur and lead actor Sloan Descombes emphasized one central point: Zion It does not stigmatize, it questions“Society is responsible for the violence in the neighborhoods. It is society as a whole that must ask itself some questions,” the producer declared. This message resonated with the audience, who praised the quality of the visuals and the power of the story, while also emphasizing the need for preventative action.
The film, eligible for Caesar 2026, highlights in particular the question of fatherhood and commitmentFar from clichés. A perspective deemed essential by several institutional stakeholders present, who emphasized the importance of offering complex and human narratives that can be transposed to the Saint-Martin context. It should be noted, however, that… the absence of subtitles for certain scenes in Creole, which deprived part of the non-Creole-speaking audience of the subtlety of the dialogues.

When young people pick up the camera to say no to violence
The evening also gave a voice to the young people of the Daniella Jeffry vocational high school, accompanied by ANIS Saint-Martin as part of the project Badness Outa StyleTheir short film, shot in Saint-Martin, offers a powerful concept: a scene of violence that freezes, giving way to a moment of realization and a different outcome. Here again, the lack of subtitles – the film being in Saint-Martin English – was regretted but did not diminish the audience’s enthusiasm.
The public then discovered the music video ‘Stop all the fighting’, created by these same young people. A clear message, conveyed through rap and visuals, praised for its sincerity and impact. A concrete demonstration that visuals can become a powerful tool for social connection, expression, and prevention, when society is willing to listen to its youth. Well done. _Vx
