Last Thursday, first-grade students from Aline Hanson School in Sandy Ground visited the station SNSM of Saint-Martin as part of a program conducted over several weeks with volunteers. This project, structured in three phases, will continue until the end of the school year.
During previous interventions by the SNSM At school, the children learned how to react if someone gets burned, bumped, cut, or has a nosebleed. Volunteers simulated injuries to better demonstrate how to react in a moment of panic, using fake blood and bandages. Far from frightening the children, they arrived Thursday morning rushing into the arms of the volunteers, whom they were seeing for the fourth time. Julien Chabeuf, a teacher of the students and also a volunteer with the SNSM (French Sea Rescue Society) for several years, is the man behind this project. He explains the success of these first aid classes with the children by their practical nature: “French isn’t necessarily mastered by all the students yet, but since first aid is very hands-on, the children really embrace all these techniques.”
That morning, the children were especially thrilled to spend three hours at sea. “One of the project’s stages is discovering our equipment, including the rescue boat,” explains Hélène Debruge, president of the Saint-Martin SNSM station since July 2025. “They came for the first time to get a better feel for the boat; some were a little scared, but it didn’t take them long to get over it,” she continues. The program included exploring the coastline, demonstrations at sea, and workshops on land, from reviewing first aid techniques to learning nautical knots. Thanks to a grant from the local educational authority, each student received a first aid kit. What the volunteers at the Saint-Martin station hope for most of all is that the children will pass on these basic skills to those around them.
