At only ten years old, Jaëlye Burnett Grabowski is preparing to represent Saint-Martin in Paris as part of the national drawing competition “Echoes from Overseas”Surrounded by her classmates, and representatives from the National Education system and the Education Department of the Collectivity, the young student of Émile Choisy school presented his work last Friday, before his scheduled departure on December 6th.
Its mosaic drawingselected from among some thirty productions, tells the story of the magic of Saint-Martin A tourist admiring a plane flying over Maho, a cocktail placed on the sand, dominoes, accras, a barbecued lobster, a young musician with a steel pan, not forgetting the island’s symbols — pelican, iguana, hummingbird.I wanted to represent our culture”Everything that makes Saint-Martin,” says Jaëlye, who created this splendid drawing encouraged by her parents and her teacher, Jocelyne Fazer.
In Paris, where she will brave the cold with her mother, the young artist will visit the Eiffel Tower, Senate and several monuments afterwards the grand final of the competition on December 8thShe will meet candidates from other overseas territories there. Evelyne Fleming gave Jaëlye valuable advice on opening up to the world, namely, to exchange with other candidates to discover their cultures.
The school’s director, André Botino, praised “a collective pride” and all emphasized the quality of Jaëlye’s work and the mobilization of the entire educational community: “You will be our artistic voice, our ambassador.” “I will represent Saint-Martin in France and I hope to win for you” she says with a contagious smile, dressed in blue White Red for the occasion.
The school is already planning to participate in the competition again, motivated by the example of their classmate. As for Jaëlye, she is enjoying the adventure. “I am very happy to be having this experience.
