INTERNATIONAL SOLIDARITY / Hurricane Melissa: a humanitarian bridge between the Caribbean and Jamaica | FAXINFO

Following the devastating passage of Hurricane Melissa, Jamaica has requested emergency aid from the European CommissionIn response to this appeal, France, a sovereign power in the Caribbean region, immediately offered its support through the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs.

The Armed Forces in the Antilles (FAA) have thus deployed an overseas support and assistance vessel (BSAOM) to transport humanitarian aid shipments to the island, in coordination with Jamaican authorities and international partner organizations.

Alerted as early as October 28th, the ship is currently sailing around the Lesser Antilles to load several dozen tons of essential suppliesThe first boarding took place on October 29th at Barbados, before further stops in Martinique and Guadeloupe.

This humanitarian aid shipment is provided by UNICEF, the French Red Cross via the Americas-Caribbean Regional Intervention Platform (PIRAC), the World Food Program (WFP), the coordinating office of the International Organization for Migration et the Caribbean Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA).

Faced with the considerable damage caused by Hurricane Melissa and a Provisional death toll of 30 in JamaicaThe French armed forces are ready to support relief and reconstruction operations. Based in Martinique and Guadeloupe, the FAA (French Armed Forces in the Antilles) comprise nearly 1200 soldiers capable of rapid intervention throughout the region to ensure the protection of populations and provide essential logistical support in the event of a natural disaster. _Vx
