Le magnitude 8,8 earthquake which struck on July 29 off the coast of Kamchatka, in eastern Russia, triggered a shock wave across the entire Pacific basin. Several countries in South America, Asia and Oceania immediately launched tsunami warnings, mobilizing emergency services and ordering the evacuation of certain coastal areasTsunamis have indeed been observed in Russia and Japan, with low intensity waves.

In Latin America, the Peruvian, Chilean, Colombian and Ecuadorian authorities have sounded the alert, calling on the population to take refuge on the heights. In Puerto La Cruz, at Peru, waves of more than two meters are feared, while the Chili activated his maximum alert level over a large portion of its coastline. Schools were closed and hundreds of people were evacuated. Ecuador, An “immediate danger” has been reported for the islands, with water levels expected to reach up to 1,5 metres.

Between 5 to 10 ocean waves should still affect the affected territories. According to estimates from the Laboratory of geophysics, the maximum wave height forecasts range between 1,10m and 2,50m for Ua Huka, Hiva Oa and Nuku Hiva. The other Marquesas Islands should be affected by heights between 0,60m and 0,90m. other archipelagos of the French Polynesia should be affected by water levels below 30 cm that do not require evacuation or sheltering. However, caution is recommended: stay away from shores and rivers.
