There’s nothing quite like a fifteen young people of local task discovered last Thursday what went on behind the scenes of the Saint-Martin SNSM stationWelcomed by the director Hélène Debruge and a team of volunteers, they were immersed in the world of sea rescue, a demanding field but bringing opportunities to young people.
The SNSM presented its missions assistance and evacuation of people in difficulty, first aid, protection of property, with interventions coordinated by the CROSS and average device in 17 minutesIn 2025, the station led twelve operations, a volume significantly lower than in previous decades, thanks in particular to the strengthening of relief systems on neighbouring islands.
Far from the clichés, Volunteers are no longer exclusively from maritime professions. Nearly half come from other backgrounds. Thanks to specialized training – piloting, mechanics, first aid, navigation – everyone can acquire a high level of skill. monthly training sessions at sea and simulations help to maintain a strong operational capability.
The young people then discovered the two boats from the stationand then introduced themselves to first aidThis is an opportunity to assess the rigor, teamwork, and transferable skills required for a commitment to the SNSM. The certified training courses provide a real springboard for building a career path.
The station relies heavily on the sponsorship, which represents 74% of its budgetFrom the age of 17, it is possible to join the SNSM (French Sea Rescue Society) as a volunteer, with full operational status from 18. This message was reiterated by the training team, who encouraged the young people to consider careers in sailing and rescue services on an island where the sea remains a familiar… yet demanding environment.
