Last Saturday, November 22nd, at Loterie Farm, Meloick Bouboune He went on stage during the festival’s closing night to receive the high school students’ winning trophy. Discreet and humble, the 17-year-old has turned his childhood memories into a true vocation: I’ve been cooking since I was 6 years old, with my family, especially on my father’s side where everyone was passionate about it. I was already being called into the kitchen to clean fish or help make cakes.
A student at Soualiga middle school, he was one of those young people who were already certain of their career path at an early age and naturally enrolled at the Daniella Jeffry vocational high school in 2023 in the hospitality/catering program. His culinary arts teacher since tenth grade, Akpéné Brégeaud, guided him through his first steps. She was also the one who encouraged her graduating seniors, starting in September, to register for the high school competition. Three of these students were selected, and among them, Meloick Boubounewhose sweet creation caught the judges’ attention: “The dessert I chose to present at the festival is the ‘Caribbean Passion Dome’, with a coconut combo base and mascarpone dome, topped with a passion fruit coulis and pearls, and decorated with edible flowers.”
While cooking is something she’s passionate about, it’s not her only passion. our star chef He is also a committed young man. A member of the Leo Club Safari since the age of 11, and already a former president of the club at such a young age, he participates in numerous field projects designed and carried out for the island’s youth and disadvantaged or disabled people. This year again, he was involved in the club’s Christmas gift drive and participated in the ‘Wishing Tree’ campaign. Standing proudly in the center of the West Indies Mall in Marigot, the conifer was adorned with 38 small paper angels placed there by Leo Club members. Each angel bore the name of a child in need or facing hardship.
After completing his vocational baccalaureate, Meloick Bouboune He’s hesitating between going into catering for the army or pursuing a vocational diploma in catering in mainland France. His preference is for pastry and dessert making, especially enjoying making delicious tiramisu for his family. A young talent to watch, and one who’s sure to continue surprising us. _LA
